Richard Bona has a lovely voice and a pleasantly jazzy sensibility, but that isn't enough to make Tiki a brilliant album. It's certainly a good album; it gently swims through many different musical seas (including Brazil's) and takes a few risks, including a collaboration with John Legend and a cover of Jaco Pastorius's 'Three Women.' Yet despite (or perhaps because of) the sweetness, the album never grabs you: It's as if, with a universe of possibilities before him, Bona chose to play only a single chord. It's a nice chord, but even 'nice' gets grating after 15 songs. Richard Bona has a lovely voice and a pleasantly jazzy sensibility, but that isn't enough to make Tiki a brilliant album.
